Open champion Louis Oosthuizen won a three-man playoff to take the Africa Open title in East London as rising English star Chris Wood, by a hair’s breadth, missed out on a first pro victory. Oosthuizen was able to make a hole from 15 feet for birdie on the first added hole, the par-four 18th, to seal his third European Tour win. Wood and Manuel Quiros from Spain could only manage pars following the trio had finished regulation play tied on 18 under par.
Wood started getting famous in 2008 when he was the most excellent amateur at the Open held at Royal Birkdale where he finished fifth. He led for a large part of the game and had to watch heartbreakingly as Quiros closed with three consecutive birdies to join him on 16-under 276 after a round of 69. The 23-year-old Bristol native had also just about finished his round in 68 when Oosthuizen was able to make eagle on the par-five 15th. The South African, who carded 70, botched to pick up any more shots above his last three holes, notwithstanding going close with an uncomplicated chip at the last part that ended up two feet to the left.
