Hiking and walking holidays are becoming increasingly more popular as holiday makers look for cheaper ways to holiday at home rather than going abroad. Even for novice walkers, it’s important to think about what sort of clothing and kit you need for a day out on the hills.
Specialist outdoor clothing is a must, and for the British climate a good quality waterproof jacket and trousers is essential. Choose something lightweight that can be easily folded up and put into a rucksack when not being used. Layer up clothing with t-shirts, fleeces and jackets so you can remove and add layers as needed. Shoes are very important and buy as good a pair as you can afford to minimise the chances of sore feet and blisters. Choose socks made from a natural material such as cotton or silk rather than a man made fibre. Even if you know the route, always take a map and compass to help you find your way home should it become foggy or you lose your bearings. Finally, especially if walking along, take your mobile phone and always let someone know where you’ve gone and when you expect to be back.
